Two years ago, I looked at my obese mum and asked myself ,”What’s wrong with her health? Why?” Shouldn’t we people – who eat more home-cooked foods – be a lot more healthier than those who don’t?
Shouldn’t we be healthier since we have more control over the kind of food we really want – eg. food with less oil, less sugar?
Most of us think nothing of buying this brand or that brand. But are we really making good choices for our nutrition? Which super brands do you trust?

Take the case of abalone sauce, which is commonly used by housewives here in Singapore. And especially during Chinese New Year!
This particular brand (shown above) has MSG (monosodium glutamate) hidden in “Modified Starch (1442)” and “Yeast Extract”. Hawker centres and restaurants in Singapore were encouraged by the government to reduce or go off this MSG totally – this was way back in the 1980s.
If your processed foods contain “Maltodextrin”, there’s a high likelihood that there’s MSG in them. If you are using artificial sugar like aspartame (not at all required for labelling), you are already taking MSG.

Are You Poisoning your Body to Improve the Taste?
Many people like me, have no response to MSG but it’s highly likely because my diet is high in magnesium (from vegetables), which partially protects the brain from reacting with MSG.
But how about those whose diet are low in magnesium? The effect is accelerated when you exercise, jog, etc. A handful of fit young men have dropped dead but no one asked around if post-mortems showed MSG or aspartame in their brains.
It’s not the MSG that is dangerous, but the free glutamic acid (78% acid while 22% is really salt) aka L-Glutamate.
“Animal studies have indicated for years that MSG might be associated with weight gain,” said Ka He, M.D., assistant professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the UNC School of Public Health. “Ours is the first study to show a link between MSG use and weight in humans.”
Others who were also involved in the MSG study included Liancheng Zhao and colleagues from Fu Wai Hospital and Cardiovascular Institute at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, researchers from Northwestern University in Chicago and the INTERMAP Cooperative Research Group. Scientific References that shows toxicity of MSG (just to name a few)
American Medical Assocation, Lucas, D.R., and Newhouse, J.P. (1957) The toxic effect of sodium L-glutamate on the inner layers of the retina.
Dr. J.W. Olney (1969). Brain lesions, obesity, and other disturbances in mice treated with monosodium glutamate.

Woh Hup is not the only brand that is responsible for misleading public…there are many! You just need to keep your eyes opened!
Manufacturers are acutely aware that many consumers would prefer NOT to have MSG in their food. For many years, the Singapore government actually advocate and encourage hawker centres and restaurants, not to use MSG.
Some manufacturers have responded by using “clean labels,” such as “hydrolyzed soy protein”, “maltodextrin” etc. MSG is sometimes hidden in food with labels that say “No Added MSG,” “No MSG Added,” and “No MSG” – Truthinlabeling.org
If your processed sauce or foods, has “yeast” or “yeast extract” labelled, there’s already MSG in it. Worser, some do not even label them because it is NOT required by the law for them to do so!
In the 1960s, free glutamic acid (MSG) was added to some babies’ commercial milk formula. A Canadian Study41 conducted, leaves no room for doubt that ingredients that contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) and free aspartic acid — known neurotoxins— are used in baby formula. It is not known if such practice is still continued. (Mothers, breast-feed your infants!)
Till today, makers of MSG like Ajinomoto, deny that their MSG products, affects our health negatively. As you read this, they are working closely with chemical companies who can alter the way wfood tastes. One day we’ll be able to taste taste bitter gourd as honey, cow dung as hamburger, and so forth! Genetic food modification is part of why we should question if we want genetically-modified foods (GMO)!
Luckily for me, most of my everyday foods do not contain food from meat sources nor abalone! I just refuse to fall prey to deceptive labelling and deceptive advertising! MSG is one of the world’s most famous genetically modified “flavour enhancer”!
What are our Alternatives?
- If you cook, choose only organically-grown and properly-processed ingredients and foods. Look out for organic certifications by established and trusted organizations.
- Download Secret Sources from Jack and Adrienne Samuels’ website (choose the FREE PDF ebook, not the US$29 printed version; free registration needed.)
- Go RAW! Learn to eat more raw delicious food (cooking them kill enzymes needed by the human body!)
- Make your own sauce and dipsby planting your own vege and fruits – you don’t need a lot of space if you’re planting chilli and Holy Basil Leaves (for curry)! Lucky Americans can ask for free seeds here!
- Teach your kids!
- Guide your chefs!
- Tell eateries and restauarants you are patronising you DON’t WANT MSG!
- In fact, let your doctor know!
- For those who want to do more…. For Singaporeans, bring it up to your MP and CASE. Such food labelling and food adverts on TV or paper should not be allowed. (For others, bring it up with your senators or town councils, etc ) Do check out my other blog post: Raw Lessons every Adult and Kids Should Get to Know
