Why our current Flu Drugs leave many of us with questions and more questions

RELENZA also known as Zanamivir, is licensed only for use as an inhaler.

“Essentially, Relenza does not directly help the cells that have already been infected; instead, it prevents other cells from being infected as well.” – eMedTV.com

There have reports of deaths AND unusual reactions to Relenza involving abnormal behavior, convulsions or delirium (a sudden, severe mental change).  Relenza also seems to be less effective in those whose symptoms weren’t severe or didn’t include a fever. Some deaths from Relenza are published by AttorneyatLaw and Canada.com

“Dr Teoh Yee Leong, the Director of Clinical Research Development and Medical Affairs Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei for GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals said,’Some side effects could be diarrhoea, nausea, nasal signs and symptoms. It’s generally mild.’” – Ref: http://www.mmail.com.my/content/11077-relenza-side-effects-mild

Have we under-estimated dangers of Relenza?

More news seem to suggest that medical authorities are actually using Relenza as a vaccine against the H1N1 Swine Flu. Ref: http://www.thepatientreport.com/2009/07/02/swine-flu-monitor-cdc-will-report-only-relenza-effective-against-h1n1-virus

So now, it does seem that our prescription drugs have multi-purpose use, doesn’t it? Talk about recycling prescription drugs!

ThaIndian.com also seem to suggest that Relenza was the initial “cure” for the H1N1 Swine Flu but found that the H1N1 Flu virus have mutated (Journal of Virology). The Australian researchers who wrote this discovery in the Journal of Virology had this in the report,”It is essential that the sensitivity of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus is constantly monitored so that the potential effectiveness of available treatments is known.”

Yep, they are going to monitor the virus while people continue suffer or die of Relenza. lol

Recently, Dr Michael Kidd and Dr Mervyn Singer from University College London Hospitals are “calling for more studies” to find out whether Relenza given intravenously could save more lives. This was after they recently ‘gambled’ and experimented on a Cancer patient admitted for shortness of breath. The 22 year-old patient did not respond to both Tamiflu capsules and inhaled Relenza. Both doctors then gave her an unlicensed (because it’s not approved by FDA) intravenous Relenza. The patient discharged from the hospital 3 weeks later. At this moment, it cannot be ascertained if the intravenous Relenza was effective, or if the corticosteroids for the lungs was what saved the woman’s life.

Fact: There’s no FDA approval for using Relenza as a H1N1 Swine Flu treatment; there’s no approval for it to be used intravenously (used as a drip).
