Hey - it's good to see you again! :) If you see a short excerpt here and wish to read more, click on the Green Title for Full Story.

This is the work of a nine-year-old! The book I mean! I received it on 28th June 2009. It must have been in my mailbox since the day before (Saturday).

What book? Here it is (it’s actually a mash-up of the book and the envelope in which it came in):

Gloson's Magnificent Poetry Book (cover and envelope)

Yep, this book is the work of a nine-year-old Malaysian dude! In his own personal blog, GlosonBlog.com, he blogs about the software and online tools he tried, school projects and competitions he took, etc. One smart kid!

Even while he was cramming his studies for mid-year exams, he was working on the illustrations for this book. Through his blog, you can easily see that his mum (dad and cats….and er….bloggers like us – ahem!) are sources of encouragement to him.

He’s been featured in the media too:

Proud Malaysian blogger Gloson Teh in the newsHere’s a short interview with Gloson:

1. Do your parents ever say if you look more like your mum or dad?

Yes, they say I look like my mom.

2. What are the 5 things you won’t leave home without (not counting money and mobile phone!)?

I can go out without anything.

3. Which countries have you visited?

Only Malaysia. Unfortunately, I haven’t visited any other countries. Except Singapore……because my mom temporarily worked there when I was 3.

4. Who is/are your favourite celebrities?

Michael Jackson, Bill Gates, Dr. Seuss, hmmm.. I think that’s all.

5. Presently, Is there an electronic gadget that you value or prefer above the rest?

Ok. It would be my laptop. Yup, that’s all.

I have a feeling Gloson can also dance and act too!

Poems and illustrations Inside Gloson's book

The illustrations in the book are rich in colour, cheerful and funny.  The poems are broken up into short paragraphs.  It’s hard for a child to get bored before the next poem is read.

I found my mum was so drawn to the book, she actually sat down and read the book, and did not even realise she wasn’t using magnifying glasses to read the poems!  I read the whole book as well, taking care not to dent any page!

The back page of the book was a LOAD of information for adults as well.  An extract of the back page:

Children’s CQ (Creative Quotient)  can be increased exponentially as the content is written from a child’s (Gloson’s) creative and unique perspective.

What’s interesting to note is that adults (who do not have the habit of reading poetry)  are able to get their CQ re-stimulated, by reading poetry books, and drawing on creative poems in books such as the one I received from Gloson.e one I received.

This poetry book has 20 poems!  For its price and quality, this is a bargain.  A similiar poetry book in soft cover would be selling for at least SG$37.00 (much more than what I’ve paid for Gloson’s book).

Cons of the book?

None if you do not count the small typo error (it doesn’t bother me at all, it makes the book “more rare” and “limited edition”!)

NOW, this will be my very first top-most reason that makes me happy because Gloson added a personal touch to the book he sent me. Through his handwriting (on the envelope and in the book where he signed), I can actually imagine the way he wrote! That is something not every book has! The envelope’s alphabets (my name and all) were carefully written over a few times.

It is actually very uplifting to read this book or when you just need a refreshing pick-me-up.

Any parent who wants to inspire their children can quote Gloson as a role model – this poetry may be one of the best investment any parent is able to make for their child. It also encourages children to be more open and communicative with their parents.
