Incidentally Peter and I used to work for the same boss (yes, a company involved in framing!)
When I first started, a retailer neighbour (who I now call WW) revealed that in all of Peter’s service with my ex-boss, he was never given a salary raise. When he hurt his back, no attempt was ever made to replace him so he could USE his medical leave. He limped to work. The employer who I now call XX DID NOT CARE.
In fact, art in the shop I worked was never replenished. I had ugly art!! There were many things I was unhappy about too.
I’d probably change a number of things if I had more control in the way things are run. I started writing articles and faxing it to certain organisations. I called several exisiting customers to find out how they are doing. In fact, I found it a little stupid why staff did not collect their birth dates; companies can send birthday vouchers etc to loyal customers, etc.
I turned a deaf ear to what WW said but I remained on friendly terms with Peter (cos I was really curious about this guy who was so loyal to XX). I find him to be an honest and ethical individual; although he may not speak/understand English well, he is a man of integrity. I won’t go into the details but I found out and can vouch that he’s NEVER attempted to take any data/clients from XX.
Peter started his framing business with some help (who doesn’t?) and he started with a clean slate of customers who decided to “follow him”.
Friends said I should have heeded WW’s warning, afterall he is a chairman on several shopping centres’ and buildings’ committee boards.
When my customer got hurt, the question that XX’ daughter asked was,”Did you make any sale today?” I was flabbergasted. Later I realised that no “amount” of friendship can ever fill that gap; she viewed me only as “one of the staff”.
When I hurt my right hand at work, my need to rest at home was totally ignored. I was criticised and although I did not “leave” without an explaination to any pending jobs and for the clients I served. Was I compensated for the injury? The answer is NO.
Peter is not the only one who left that framing company to set up his own. Another staff (of another branch) also set up her own – she’s now a partner of Q FRAMING UNLIMITED.
The PROs and CONs Framers like Peter can do small to medium-sized frames much more quickly than larger framing companies. The lack of more baroque designs for framing is not a major drawback. Frames are also much more affordable because they may not be exported from Europe. The only drawback for Peter, he needs good staff! And he may need to learn how to use email and social media to his advantage !
He is a one-man show but with lots of support from neighbouring retailers. It’s best to call for an appointment. (And oh yeah, WW, if you are reading this, your listing in yellowpages.com.sg should be under “Framing” instead.
)
Don’t take my recommendation blindly – shop around to compare if you wish! Give your business to people who really CARE for you and your framing requirements, instead of just wanting your money!
P.S. I have TOP KEYWORDS in Google for ‘wordpress’ and ‘themes’. Now, see if I can get top keywords for “framing” and “art” by Jan 2009!! Something I intend to do and prove I can do! Stay tuned!
