What’s Hime Gyaru?
Complexion: tanned to fair (but not very tanned)
Clothing Colours – mostly pinks and whites, sometimes red and black and any pastel colours, flower designs, etc. Almost anything frilly or lacy.
Hair – long-roll curly hair, sometimes bleached blonde or shades of burgundy, sometimes bee-hive hairstyle
Nails – “Bling bling” fingernails caked in glitter and imitation precious stones.
Jewellry – Lots of bows (ribbons) and crystals or fake diamonds. Lots of bling, faux fur and lace. Brooches and bracelets designed like boo-boo kitties, clowns and ice-cream cones.
Mobile phones: jewel stickers to make cellphones look like gaudy national treasures.
Shoes: Cinderalla high-heels, see-through stilletoes, shoes with lots of glitter or 3-dimensional flowers. Another playful version of the Hime Gyaru wear knee-high stockings and flat-coled ballet-inspired shoes.
Other accessories: Lacy gloves, lacy or cutesy or over-sized ribbon head “gear”, lacy gloves and lacy umbrellas, lace cuffs (for wrists),
Hime Gyaru Fashion started in Japan although I see it as a variation of the Victorian dresses prevalent in ‘ancient eras’ USA, Britain and Europe.
Celebrities Yuri Ebihara and Tsubasa Masuwaka are perhaps the most well-known for publicly appearing in their Hime Gyaru styles.

Which FASHION STYLE is you?
Other styles that could be YOU
Gothic
Clothing Colours – black, white, other dark colours
Jewellry – crosses, other religious symbols, sometimes crowns, lots of silver and metals
“Kurothic” is also a gothic but they wear mostly black.
Decora
Clothes and jewelry has lots of Cherries, cakes, hearts, ribbons, bows. All loud and psychadelic colours of the 1960s, lots of stripes at times.
Other accessories – stuffed animals, bags, colourful knee-high socks, plastic accessories (hoops, rings, necklaces and earrings), Character goods (Winnie the Pooh, Hello Kitty and Marie from Disney’s The Artistocats are best) and a rolling suitcase (for clothes and accessories).
Punk uses American British punk elements.
Clothing colours – black, white, red, plaid.
Jewellry – safety pins, chains, etc.
Other accessories – bags, purses.
Walita (my definition!) – traditional Japanese clothing mixed with any one of above fashion.
Clothing colours – kimono or yukata prints.
Other accessories – bags, purses.
Emo? I have a feeling it’s a mix of Gothic and a always-frowning-and-my-life-sucks kind of image. ![]()
P.S. Nowadays there’s a common combination of the Lolita Gyaru (or Gyaru Lolita). It is not necessary that the Gyaru has low-cut tops (can be high necklines) or very short skirts.
